Two ingredients run everything. Altitude: temperature drops steadily as you climb, which is why sea-level Tamarindo bakes while Atenas, an hour inland and a kilometer up, lives in permanent spring. The mountain spine: the cordilleras split the country into a drier Pacific side and a wetter Caribbean side, and wring rain out of the air at different elevations. Guanacaste: The Dry Tropics
The northwest is Costa Rica's sun engine — a genuine dry season (roughly December–April) of cloudless gold, and a green season that arrives as afternoon drama rather than all-day grey. What the brochure omits: late dry season turns the landscape properly brown, temperatures run hot, and air conditioning is a lifestyle line item. The Central Valley: Eternal Spring
San José's highland bowl — Atenas, Grecia, Escazú, Santa Ana — is the climate sweet spot that made Costa Rica a retirement legend: mid-70s days, cool nights, no heating, no A/C, ever. Rainy season means dependable afternoon downpours and theatrical greens. The trade: no ocean out the window. Choose it if: you want the lowest utility bills, year-round gardening, and weather that never argues with your plans. (It's also why Valley couples live well on $1,600–$2,400 a month.)
The Cloud Forest Belt: Costa Rica in a Sweater
Climb higher — Monteverde and its cousins — and you enter the mist: cool, dramatic, ferns on every surface, resplendent quetzals in the avocado trees. It's ravishing and niche: genuinely chilly nights, persistent damp, and remoteness. Choose it if: you own wool socks on purpose and consider fog romantic rather than inconvenient.
The Central & Southern Pacific: The Lush Coast
From Jacó down through Manuel Antonio to Uvita and Ojochal, rain and sun negotiate all year and the jungle wins every negotiation — this is the green-wall-meets-ocean Costa Rica of documentaries, with wildlife density to match. The costs: real humidity, a serious September–October wet peak, and a maintenance tempo (mold patrol, metal care) that coastal owners learn to respect. Choose it if: wildlife-as-neighbors is the actual dream and you'd rather squeegee than dust.
The Caribbean: The Other Costa Rica
Its own weather system — no tidy dry season, but famous sunny windows when the Pacific pours — plus a distinct culture and slower development. A wonderful place to know about; a more adventurous place to own.
How to Actually Test-Drive a Microclimate
- Visit in the worst month, not the best. Anyone can love February. September tells the truth.
- Sleep at the property's altitude. A hillside 300 meters up can be a different climate from the beach road below it.
- Ask about the specific ridge. Locals speak microclimate fluently — "that side of the hill gets the wind" is real data.
- Price the climate into ownership: A/C loads in the dry tropics, dehumidifiers and upkeep on the lush coast, neither in the Valley. Same 0.25% property tax everywhere; very different utility and maintenance lines.
